The Medical Journal of Malaysia (MJM), in collaboration with Manipal University College Malaysia (MUCM) and the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), successfully organised the National Seminar for Authors of Medical Journals and AI in Medical Research & Publication on 23–24 May 2026 at the MUCM campus in Melaka. Conducted in a hybrid format, the seminar attracted 125 participants from universities, healthcare institutions, and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
The seminar was officiated by Prof Dr Jayakumar Gurusamy, Vice-Chancellor of MUCM. The first day focused on scientific publishing and manuscript preparation, covering topics such as publication ethics, scientific misconduct, manuscript writing, statistical reporting, case reports, peer review, and clinical trial reporting. As Editor-in-Chief of MJM and Organising Chair of the seminar, Prof Dr Victor Hoe Chee Wai delivered a session on “Common Errors Authors Make in Submissions to MJM: Why Some Articles Get Rejected and Predatory Journals”, sharing practical insights on improving manuscript quality and navigating the publication process.
The second day featured a workshop on The Transformative Power of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Research and Publication. Sessions explored AI in scientific writing, prompt engineering, responsible and ethical use of AI, journal targeting and submission strategies, and practical applications of AI tools to support researchers and authors. The workshop highlighted both the opportunities and challenges associated with integrating AI into medical research, education, and scholarly communication.
The seminar brought together an experienced panel of speakers from Malaysia and Singapore, including Prof Datuk Dr Lekhraj Rampal, Prof Dr Mahesh Choolani, Dr Vivek Jason, Dr Nishakanthi Gopalan, and other experts in medical research, publishing, and artificial intelligence. MJM extends its appreciation to Dr Izmuni Bohari, Deputy Director-General of Health (Public Health), Ministry of Health Malaysia, for supporting the participation of 50 online attendees from the Ministry of Health, which significantly broadened the seminar’s reach and impact.
As MJM’s first seminar dedicated to artificial intelligence in medical research and publication, the event marked an important milestone in preparing researchers and healthcare professionals for the evolving landscape of scientific communication. The strong engagement from participants reflected growing interest in AI-related competencies while reinforcing the importance of research integrity, publication ethics, and responsible AI use. The seminar also reaffirmed MJM’s commitment to advancing research excellence, capacity building, and innovation in medical and public health research.
