Department of Social and Preventive Medicine Staff Honoured at ACUM 2026

The Universiti Malaya Excellence Awards (Anugerah Cemerlang Universiti Malaya, ACUM) 2026, held on 21 May 2026, celebrated outstanding achievements and impactful contributions by members of the Universiti Malaya community in the areas of research, teaching, innovation, consultancy, and service. Marking its 15th year since the awards were first introduced in 2009, ACUM continues to recognise individuals and teams whose work has contributed significantly to academic excellence, institutional development, and societal impact.

This year, three staff members from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, were recognised for their achievements across consultancy, digital education, and research excellence.

Dr Ng Ai Kah was part of the team that received the High-Impact Consultancy Project Award for the project Study on Poverty Alleviation in Sarawak. The interdisciplinary consultancy initiative was recognised for its contribution towards strengthening poverty alleviation strategies in Sarawak through evidence-informed policy and development approaches. The project highlighted the importance of collaborative and impactful consultancy work in addressing societal challenges.

Professor Dr Victor CW Hoe received recognition in the Innovative E-Learning category for his contributions to digital and technology-enhanced education. His work in developing e-learning initiatives, digital teaching materials, and technology-supported educational approaches has strengthened teaching and learning experiences within public health and medical education.

Meanwhile, Professor Dr Sanjay Rampal A/L Lekhraj Rampal was honoured in the Highest Citation Researcher (Science Category) category in recognition of his outstanding research impact and scholarly contributions in epidemiology and public health. His work in obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disease research has contributed significantly to advancing scientific knowledge and enhancing Universiti Malaya’s international research visibility.

The recognition received by these staff members reflects the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine’s continued commitment to excellence in research, education, consultancy, and public health leadership. Their achievements also demonstrate the department’s ongoing efforts in generating impactful knowledge and contributing towards societal wellbeing at both national and global levels.
