The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (popularly known as SPM) is one of the teaching departments in the Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya. It was formed in 1964, one year after the founding of the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. The department are involved in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate teachings.
The Master of Public Health Programme was started in 1973 to cater to the needs of the country. There are now 612 Master of Public Health and 106 Master in Medical Science (Public Health) graduates from Malaysia and around the world. They now serve with distinction in the Ministry of Health, universities and various National and International bodies, for example. Malaysian Armed Forces, WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and in town and city councils in Malaysia and around the world. The postgraduates programme from the Department have expanded to cater to the ever changing world landscape. It now includes Master of Medical Science in Public Health, Master of Public Health Speciality and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH).
Being a department with a vision and mission, it is dedicated to the discipline of Public Health and looks forward to the future with vigour and enthusiasm.

A number of the academic staff from the department participated in the 41st APACPH Conference held in Taipei, Taiwan. A number of oral presentations and poster presentations were presented by academicians from the department during the conference. A/P Dr Retnewari had also represented the university in signing the APACPH Declaration during the closing ceremony on the 6 December 2009.

The department bids farewell to Mdm Wee Bee Suan, who is transferring out to pursuit her career in Terengganu. To appreciate her contributions throughout her tenure, the department held a farewell lunch and wish her all the best for her future endeavours.

Congratulations to A/P Retneswari who was inducted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, Royal College of Physician, Ireland at its Annual Admission Ceremony on Friday 20th November 2009.

The department held a farewell lunch for Dr. Amina Khambalia. Dr. Amina completed her tenure as a fellow for the Julius Centre UM, and will be heading back to Australia to continue her work. The department would like to thank Dr. Amina and wish her all the best for the future.

Professor Dennis D'Auria from the University of Wales was in the department as the external examiner for the defence of the Master in Public Health (Occupational Health) candidate. While here, Professor Dennis D'Auria was also given a briefing of the department by the HOD. Following the exam, he was treated for lunch by the dean and later gave a review of the deparment's curriculum and activities.

The Occupational Medicine Clinic is a referral clinic for occupational diseases and is open on every Monday and Thursday from 2pm to 5 pm at Specialist Clinic, Ground Floor, University Malaya Medical Centre.
