The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (popularly known as SPM) is one of the teaching departments in the Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya. It was formed in 1964, one year after the founding of the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. The department are involved in both Undergraduate and Postgraduate teachings.
The Master of Public Health Programme was started in 1973 to cater to the needs of the country. There are now 612 Master of Public Health and 106 Master in Medical Science (Public Health) graduates from Malaysia and around the world. They now serve with distinction in the Ministry of Health, universities and various National and International bodies, for example. Malaysian Armed Forces, WHO, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and in town and city councils in Malaysia and around the world. The postgraduates programme from the Department have expanded to cater to the ever changing world landscape. It now includes Master of Medical Science in Public Health, Master of Public Health Speciality and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH).
Being a department with a vision and mission, it is dedicated to the discipline of Public Health and looks forward to the future with vigour and enthusiasm.

The department received a visit by Prof. Aw Tar Ching from the University of UAE. The week long visit was in conjunction with his tenure as the external examiner for the MBBS phase 3A examination.

A/P Dr. Dean Harris from the University of North carolina visited the department. While here, he also gave a clinical talk to the faculty entitled "President Obama and the Continuing Struggle for Health Reform in the United States".

Train the Trainers workshop was organized by AsiaLink on 22 to 24 of July 2010 at Corus Paradise, Port Dickson . It was aimed to train clinicians in University of Malaya (UM) to improve knowledge on etiology, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment or prevention of disease. It was attended by 22 clinicians from various deparments. The training focused strongly on clinical epidemiologic principles and methods for patient-oriented research. It was conducted by the professor and epidemiologists from Julius Centre University of Malaya.

The SPM Department participated in the UM Library Carnival 2010 by providing a "Wellness Health Screening" to the visitors at the carnival. The free health screening was well received and was attended by many of the visitors.

The Occupational Medicine Clinic is a referral clinic for occupational diseases and is open on every Monday and Thursday from 2pm to 5 pm at Specialist Clinic, Ground Floor, University Malaya Medical Centre.
