PhD Thesis Seminar: Ms Hoo Yee Yin on Cancer Comorbidities and Survivorship Outcomes

The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, successfully held a Thesis Seminar for our PhD candidate, Ms Hoo Yee Yin, on 28 April 2026 (Tuesday), from 11.00 am to 12.00 pm at Dewan Kuliah Sedingin (DK7), Level 3, Block J, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.

Ms Hoo Yee Yin presented her thesis entitled “Burden of Comorbidities in Individuals with Cancer and Its Impact on Survivorship Outcomes in a Low- and Middle-Income Setting.” Her presentation provided valuable insights into how co-existing health conditions can significantly influence cancer care and survivorship. In particular, she highlighted the implications of comorbidities on treatment decision-making, the complexity of care required, and the broader impact on patient-centred outcomes and quality of life. Her work underscores the importance of adopting more holistic and context-sensitive approaches to cancer care, especially in resource-constrained settings.

She was supervised by Professor Dr Nirmala Bhoo Pathy, Adjunct Professor Dr Mahmoud Danaee, and Professor Dr Bogda Koczwara.

The session was chaired by Dr Lim Sin How, with an esteemed panel comprising Professor Dr Noran Naqiah Hairi and Dr Abdul Hanif Bin Mohamad Yahaya, who provided thoughtful questions, constructive feedback, and valuable academic insights to further strengthen the candidate’s work.

The seminar was very well attended, with more than 30 participants, including our Head of Department, Professor Dr Victor CW Hoe, faculty members, colleagues, postgraduate students, and fellow researchers, reflecting the strong academic interest and collegial support within the department.

The Department would like to extend its sincere appreciation to all who attended and contributed to the success of the seminar. We also congratulate Ms Hoo Yee Yin on the successful completion of this important milestone in her doctoral journey and wish her continued success in the final stages of her PhD candidature.

This write-up was prepared by Dr Howie Lim Sin How and Mdm. Noor Rasida Abdullah, from the PhD and MMedSc Unit, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
