Warmest congratulations to Nur Aimimastura binti Berahim @ Abd Wahab on the successful completion of her Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) viva voce at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
Her dissertation, titled “Development and Evaluation of the Clinical Pathways for Acute Coronary Syndrome in the Emergency Department, Universiti Malaya Medical Centre”, reflects an important and timely contribution to emergency care, health systems improvement, and public health practice.

Short Summary of the Thesis
Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) remains one of the most critical conditions encountered in emergency departments, where timely, consistent, and evidence-based management can significantly influence patient outcomes. In this thesis, Nur Aimimastura examined the challenges caused by variations in clinical practice and resource utilisation in the management of suspected ACS cases in the Emergency Department of Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.
Her research focused on the development, implementation, and evaluation of standardised clinical pathways for ACS management. Through a detailed assessment of existing practices, including cost analysis, the study identified inconsistencies in patient management prior to the introduction of these pathways. Following implementation, the findings showed that the clinical pathways helped to reduce practice variability, improve consistency of care, and enhance the efficiency of resource use, particularly in diagnostic investigations and medication management.
Although the study also found that actual treatment costs were higher than initially anticipated across all ACS diagnoses, this important insight adds depth to the understanding of pathway-based care. It highlights that while standardisation improves efficiency and consistency, successful implementation must be supported by realistic costing, staff training, and continuous monitoring to achieve optimal outcomes.
Highlight of the Candidate’s Achievement
Nur Aimimastura’s achievement is noteworthy on several levels. She has successfully completed a complex, practice-orientated doctoral study that bridges clinical care, health service delivery, and public health systems strengthening. Her work demonstrates strong scholarly rigour by not only identifying gaps in emergency department practice but also designing a practical intervention and evaluating its real-world impact.
Contribution to Public Health
This thesis makes a meaningful contribution to public health, particularly in the areas of healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, and efficient resource management.
Cardiovascular disease remains a major public health concern, and acute coronary syndrome requires rapid and coordinated intervention. By focusing on standardising care in the emergency department, Nur Aimimastura’s work supports broader public health goals of reducing avoidable variation in treatment, improving service delivery, and strengthening system responsiveness for time-sensitive conditions.
