The workshop “Responsible AI Use in Research Writing and Publishing: Maximising Tools and Minimising Biases” is jointly organised by the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health (APJPH). The programme aims to enhance participants’ scientific writing and publishing skills while promoting the responsible and ethical use of AI in academic research.

The workshop will provide participants with practical guidance on developing high-quality scientific manuscripts, including effective manuscript structuring, publication strategies, and understanding the expectations of journal editors and reviewers. Participants will also gain insights into the appropriate use of AI tools in research writing, as well as the biases, limitations, and ethical considerations associated with their use.

In addition to expert presentations, the programme includes one-to-one manuscript consultation sessions, providing participants with personalised feedback to improve the quality, impact, and publication readiness of their manuscripts. The workshop is targeted at researchers, academic staff, postgraduate students, and professionals involved in research and scholarly publishing.

E-certificate of attendance will be given to all participants.

 
Speakers

Professor Dr Nik Daliana Nik Farid

Professor Dr Nik Daliana Nik Farid is a Public Health Medical Specialist and Professor at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Adelaide and later completed her MPH and DrPH at Universiti Malaya. With experience in the Ministry of Health and academia, she has a strong interest in adolescent health, particularly sexual and reproductive health, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, and risk behaviours. She currently leads the Centre for Population Health and coordinates the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) programme at Universiti Malaya.

Professor Dr Wah Yun Low

Professor Dr Wah Yun Low is a distinguished public health academic and researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She is internationally recognised for her work in adolescent health, sexuality education, vulnerable populations, and community health development. She has led numerous research and capacity-building initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region and currently serves as President of the Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH). Professor Low is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health and has received multiple awards for her contributions to public health leadership, research, and education.

Emeritus Professor Dr Colin Binns

Emeritus Professor Dr Colin Binns is a Professor of Public Health at Curtin University, Australia, and a globally recognised expert in public health nutrition, breastfeeding, and international health. He previously served as the founding Head of Curtin University’s School of Public Health and has contributed extensively to public health policy and research across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. He has published more than 300 scientific papers and has advised governments and international organisations on nutrition and public health. He currently serves as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health.

Professor Dr Victor Hoe

Professor Dr Victor Hoe Abdullah is a Public Health Medical Specialist and Professor at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, where he currently serves as Head of Department. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Medical Journal of Malaysia. His expertise spans occupational health, workplace wellness, ergonomics, and health risk assessment. A Fellow of several professional academies, he has contributed significantly to public health research, education, and policy development in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region. He is widely recognised for his leadership, research excellence, and contributions to medical education and public health communication.

Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud

Emeritus Professor Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud is Malaysia’s first medical doctor to obtain a PhD in Health Informatics and the country’s first Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology and Health Informatics. He previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) at Universiti Malaya. A renowned scholar, policy advisor, and public health leader, he has played key roles in advancing health informatics, epidemiology, research governance, and higher education in Malaysia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he chaired national advisory initiatives and contributed directly to evidence-based public health policy and strategy.
