PUTRAJAYA, 24 September 2026 — The inaugural meeting of the National Public Health Medicine Specialist Advisory Committee (Jawatankuasa Penasihat Kepakaran Perubatan Kesihatan Awam Kebangsaan) was held at the Stegomyia Meeting Room, Complex E, Putrajaya.
The establishment of the committee was initiated and organised by Dr Ismuni bin Bohari, Deputy Director-General of Health (Public Health), Ministry of Health Malaysia, who also chaired the inaugural meeting.
The committee brings together representatives from key sectors involved in developing and practising public health medicine in Malaysia, including:
- Relevant divisions and programmes within the Ministry of Health Malaysia;
- Leaders representing the public health medicine subspecialties of non-communicable disease epidemiology, communicable disease epidemiology, health management, family health, occupational health and environmental health;
- Professional bodies representing public health medicine specialists;
- Public health medicine specialists from the Malaysian Armed Forces; and
- Academic representatives from public universities across Malaysia.
Universiti Malaya was represented by Professor Dr Victor Hoe, Head of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine. His participation contributed the perspective of academic public health medicine to the committee’s national-level discussions.
The meeting provided a national platform to discuss the future direction of public health medicine and address important issues affecting the specialty. Its agenda included deliberations on matters arising, the formulation of resolutions and a closing session.
The committee’s broad representation reflects the multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral nature of public health medicine. By bringing together stakeholders from government, professional bodies, the armed forces and academia, the initiative seeks to strengthen coordination and establish a clearer strategic direction for the continued development of the specialty.
This inaugural meeting represents an important milestone in creating a structured national advisory platform for public health medicine specialists and strengthening the specialty’s contribution to Malaysia’s public health system.
