SPM Thesis Boot Camp was conducted at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya from 11th December to 15th December 2023 with the primary aim of assisting Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) and PhD students in making significant progress on their thesis within a condensed timeframe.
The boot camp was designed to provide structure, guidance, and a supportive environment to enhance productivity and alleviate the common challenges faced during the thesis writing process. The five-day program consisted of a thesis writing seminar, a lecture on writing about data and methodology, sharing sessions on the doctorate journey and preparation for viva voce, as well as individual consultations with academicians.
A total of 15 doctorate students from the Faculty of Medicine participated in the boot camp. The participants were at different stages of their thesis projects, ranging from proposal writing, and initial research to final drafts. Feedback from participants was overall positive, with many expressing gratitude for the structured environment and the opportunity to focus exclusively on their thesis writing. The peer and lecturer interaction contributed to enhancing productivity and fostering a supportive academic environment.
The department will consider hosting regular thesis boot camps, writing workshops, and follow-up sessions to sustain the momentum gained by the students during the boot camp. The department would also like to thank all participants who attended the boot camp, the organizing committee from SPM, and the Faculty of Medicine for supporting this activity.
The write-up was written by Associate Professor Dr Nik Daliana Nik Farid, DrPH Coordinator, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
