Deeparaya Celebration 2006

Each year, in conjunction with the festive season of Hari Raya, the department together with Master’s candidates organises a celebratory gathering to foster community spirit and cultural appreciation. In 2006, the event was uniquely themed as a Deeparaya Celebration, bringing together the joyous occasions of Deepavali (21 October 2006) and Hari Raya (24 October 2006).

The “open house” concept is a well-established Malaysian tradition, practised across major festive celebrations such as Hari Raya, Deepavali, Christmas, and Chinese New Year. It reflects the nation’s multicultural ethos, where communities warmly welcome friends, colleagues, and neighbours to share in the festivities.

This year’s celebration was particularly vibrant and engaging. Many Master’s candidates attended in traditional attire, adding colour and cultural richness to the event. The gathering was further enlivened by the presence of family members and friends, reinforcing a sense of inclusivity and togetherness.

Guests enjoyed a sumptuous spread of Malaysian cuisine, including popular favourites such as satay. A highlight of the event was the lucky draw organised by the Master’s candidates, which added an element of excitement and participation.

The celebration also featured a meaningful gesture for the younger attendees, who received “Duit Raya” presented by our distinguished Dato’, reflecting the spirit of generosity and goodwill associated with the festive season.

Overall, the Deeparaya Celebration 2006 exemplified the department’s commitment to fostering unity, cultural appreciation, and a strong sense of community among students and staff.
