Dementia is now one of the world’s leading causes of death and disability. Populations are ageing everywhere and so the burden of dementia will increase. Global Burden of Disease data suggest that the number of people with dementia in Malaysia will increase from 142,000 in 2019 to 496,000 in 2050.

This lecture will cover the prevalence and incidence of dementia and its risk factors, using data from epidemiological studies conducted in many countries around the world. Controversial new research on treatment for dementia will also be discussed. Methodological challenges in studying the epidemiology of dementia will be highlighted throughout the lecture.
