The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, recently welcomed a delegation from the Faculty of Public Health, Mahasarakham University, Thailand, for an academic visit aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration and fostering regional partnerships in public health.
The visiting delegation was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sumattana Glangkarn, Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, accompanied by eight faculty members representing a diverse range of disciplines, including public health, environmental health, occupational health and safety, nutrition and dietetics, and health technology.
The delegation was received by Professor Dr. Victor Hoe, Head of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tengku Ahmad Shahrizal Tengku Dato’ Omar, Deputy Dean (Student Affairs), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya.
During the visit, representatives from both institutions engaged in productive discussions on areas of shared interest, including community-based participatory research, rural health, public health education, and opportunities for collaborative research and academic exchange. The session provided a valuable platform for sharing experiences, best practices, and innovative approaches to addressing contemporary public health challenges across the Asia-Pacific region.
As an academic department committed to excellence in public health education, research, and community engagement, the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine continues to strengthen international partnerships that support knowledge exchange, capacity building, and collaborative research. Such engagements play an important role in advancing evidence-based public health practice while preparing future public health professionals to address emerging regional and global health challenges.
