The Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) Programme successfully organised the Effective Thesis Writing Workshop on 22–23 June 2026 at the SPM Studio, Level 1, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. The two-day workshop was facilitated by Professor Dr Moy Foong Ming, Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, whose extensive experience in research, scientific writing, and postgraduate supervision provided participants with invaluable insights into the thesis writing process.
Designed specifically for part 2 DrPH students, the workshop aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of the expectations and requirements of thesis writing while equipping them with practical strategies for planning, organising, and producing a high-quality thesis. Throughout the two days, participants were guided on effective scientific writing techniques to improve the clarity, coherence, and academic quality of their research.
The workshop focused on three key learning objectives:
- Developing a deeper understanding of the expectations and requirements of a thesis/dissertation.
- Applying effective strategies for planning and producing a high-quality thesis.
- Enhancing scientific writing skills to effectively communicate research findings.
Drawing from her extensive experience as a researcher and postgraduate supervisor, Professor Dr Moy shared practical advice, real-life examples, and valuable perspectives from both the supervisor’s and examiner’s viewpoints. Interactive discussions and hands-on activities encouraged participants to reflect on common challenges in thesis writing and adopt best practices that will support their doctoral research journey.
Participant feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the workshop as helpful, engaging, eye-opening, and highly informative. Participants particularly appreciated the practical guidance on scientific writing, thesis organisation, and the opportunity to gain insights into examiner expectations. Several participants also recommended that the workshop be offered earlier in the DrPH programme to maximise its benefits throughout their research journey.
The DrPH Programme extends its sincere appreciation to Professor Dr Moy Foong Ming for generously sharing her expertise and to all participants for their enthusiastic engagement throughout the workshop. It is hoped that the knowledge and skills gained will support participants in producing high-quality theses and contribute to their success as future public health professionals and researchers.
