Rethinking Occupational Safety: Insights from “Clean Streets, Unsafe Work?”

Dr Rathiruba Selvaraju, a DrPH student at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, authored an article titled “Clean Streets, Unsafe Work?” published on CodeBlue as part of her Social and Behavioural Sciences coursework.

The article highlights the occupational risks faced by municipal sanitation workers, including exposure to hazardous materials and challenging working conditions. It emphasises that safety practices cannot be viewed solely as compliance issues, but must be understood within the context of social and behavioural factors such as work demands, environment, and workplace norms.

Dr Rathiruba underscores the importance of incorporating these perspectives into occupational safety and health, as well as engaging workers in developing practical and effective solutions. This approach is crucial in ensuring safer working conditions while strengthening public health outcomes.
