Addressing HIV Stigma: Insights from Dr Nur Afiqah on World AIDS Day

In conjunction with World AIDS Day on 1 December, Dr Nur Afiqah Mohd Salleh, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine and Vice President of the Malaysian AIDS Council, appeared on Astro Awani to discuss some of the most common misconceptions surrounding HIV. During the segment, she highlighted how long-standing myths and misinformation continue to fuel stigma — a barrier that still prevents many individuals from coming forward for testing, accessing treatment, or seeking the support they need.

Dr Afiqah underscored that stigma not only undermines public health efforts but also directly contributes to avoidable illness and deaths when people delay or avoid care. She reiterated that with today’s medical advancements, including highly effective antiretroviral therapy, people living with HIV can enjoy long, healthy, and productive lives. Early diagnosis and prompt initiation of treatment remain key, and she encouraged the public to stay informed, challenge outdated beliefs, and support efforts to reduce discrimination in all forms.
