Strengthening Regional Public Health Capacity: TDR RTC WPR Delegation Visit to Hue University

Professor Dr Rafdzah Ahmad Zaki delivered an engaging presentation on the initiatives of the WHO-TDR Western Pacific Regional Training Centre (RTC) at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam. Invited by Professor Dr Dang Thi Anh Thu, Professor Dr Rafdzah shared valuable insights into the RTC’s ongoing efforts to build regional capacity in addressing infectious diseases of poverty.

The presentation highlighted how the RTC, based at Universiti Malaya’s Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, plays a pivotal role in equipping public health professionals across the Western Pacific with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle pressing global health challenges.

Forging Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Impact

Leading the RTC delegation, Professor Dr Sanjay Rampal spearheaded discussions aimed at establishing long-term academic and research collaborations with Hue University.

The proposed partnerships are guided by key principles: alignment with local community needs, reinforcement of existing local expertise, and a commitment to sustainable impact. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in fostering mutual learning and resource sharing between institutions in Malaysia and Vietnam. It underscores the critical role of academic partnerships in enhancing regional preparedness and response to infectious disease threats.

Fostering a Spirit of Knowledge Exchange

The event was not only marked by substantive scientific exchange but also by the warm hospitality extended by the hosts at Hue University. Thoughtful gestures, including beautifully arranged flowers and a welcoming atmosphere, underscored the value of cultural exchange in strengthening international academic ties.

Such initiatives exemplify how regional cooperation can meaningfully contribute to global health security by supporting local capacities and building networks that prioritise community health outcomes.
