On 3 June 2025, a group of Master of Public Health (MPH) students from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, embarked on an educational visit to the 3M Innovation Centre in Shah Alam. This visit was part of the Occupational Medicine course and was led by Prof. Dr Victor Hoe, accompanied by Dr Rama Krishna Supramaniam and Dr Bala Murali Sundram.

Hands-On Learning in Respiratory Protection

The highlight of the visit was a comprehensive lecture and demonstration session conducted by Ms Sherlyn Voon, Advance Application Engineering Specialist of 3M. Focusing on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), the session emphasised the importance of respiratory protection in occupational settings. Students were introduced to the principles, selection, and practical applications of respiratory PPE, gaining first-hand insights into the technologies that underpin effective protection in various work environments.

Following the lecture, the group toured the Innovation Centre, where they explored the latest advancements in PPE and other safety solutions. This interactive experience allowed students to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, reinforcing critical concepts in occupational health practice.

Relevance to Public and Occupational Health

As occupational hazards continue to pose significant risks across industries, especially in light of recent global health events, the importance of adequate PPE cannot be overstated. This visit not only enhanced the students’ understanding of protective technologies but also underscored the role of innovation and industry partnerships in safeguarding worker health. Such experiences are invaluable in preparing future public health professionals to advocate for and implement effective occupational health measures.
