Associate Professor Dr Mas Ayu Said is the New Head of Department of Public Health

Firstly, we would like to thank former Head, Professor Dr Victor Hoe Chee Wai Abdullah for his service and contribution since February 2021. The position is handed to Associate Professor Dr Mas Ayu Said, as the new Head of Department of Public Health starting 12th August 2022.

Dr Mas Ayu Binti Said (MBBS, MPH, PhD) is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. She is also a consultant epidemiologist at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre. She graduated as a medical doctor from Universiti Malaya in 1995. She obtained her Master’s degree in Public Health with distinction, followed by a PhD in Psychiatric Epidemiology awarded at the Universiti Malaya.

Department of Public Health or Jabatan Kesihatan Awam (JKA) is recognized as part of the clinical departments at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) or Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM) since 18th January 2016. The objectives of the department are to protect health and wellness, prevent diseases and outbreaks; promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle; conduct wellness programmes and public health consultation services in UMMC as well as the surrounding community.

In general, this department will carry out three core functions of public health:

1. Assessment (assessing health needs of UMMC Community),
2. Policy expansion (plan and develop policies based on health priority and needs) and,
3. Assurance (manage resources, disseminate knowledge and information to educate the public on health issues).

Highlights for August 2022

JKA is coordinating for UMMC in the upcoming health campaign event (P105) that will be held on the 21st of August 2022 (Sunday) in the Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Lembah Subang 1 (Taman Putra Damai), Petaling Jaya.
