In conjunction with the Malaysian Medics International TM Exchange Programme Malaysia and China which was held from the 1st of March 2022 (Tuesday) to 6th of March 2022 (Sunday), a talk on “Shedding Light on Metabolic Syndrome” was delivered by duet speakers; Associate Professor Dr Farizah Mohd Hairi, and Miss Fia Iskandar on Wednesday, 2nd of March 2022 at 8.00 pm to 10.00 pm.
The talk was held online via Zoom platform and was attended by 90 exchange students from Malaysia and China. The talk was also broadcasted LIVE to more than 200 students in China. All participants are medical students from the first to the final year of their undergraduate medical program from various universities in Malaysia and China.
The talk covers three parts. In part one, Dr Farizah covered the prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome in Malaysia and its risk factors and common diseases associated with Metabolic Syndrome. In part two, Miss Fia Iskandar covered the aims of public health in preventing and controlling Metabolic Syndrome and the types of prevention measures. In Part three, both Dr Farizah and Miss Fia covered the topics on awareness and advocacy; their role as medical students, our role as healthcare professionals, the government policies and non-government efforts to control and prevent Metabolic Syndrome.
During the question-and-answer session, the students from both China and Malaysia asked many questions about various aspects of Metabolic Syndrome. After that, the session was closed with quizzes where the students scored 83% accuracy in their answers. Well done! After the session, both of us, Dr Farizah and Miss Fia attended a debrief with the Organizing Committee for a feedback and evaluation session. All participants who attended the session will receive a copy of a digital handbook on “Shedding Light on Metabolic Syndrome”.
