COVID-19 is a national crisis and not only a MOH problem

Another epidemiologist from the Department does not agree with the sudden opening up of the economy. In an interview with the News Straits Times newspaper, Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud said that the World Health Organisation has emphasised time and again the need to gradually ease restrictions, as there maybe a second waves after such relaxations. This can be seen in the experience of places like Hokkaido.

However, he continues that since the announcement has been made, one could hope for was for stakeholders in businesses and industries to quickly develop standard operating procedure (SOP) with an emphasis on public health over profits.

Dr Awang Bulgiba said the main issue was that the pandemic was being perceived as a problem for the Health Ministry, instead of a national crisis.
