The Department would like to congratulate Dr Nur Sofiani Diana Mohammed Yusof on the successful completion of her Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) viva voce. Her thesis topic was “The Status and Associated Factors of Financial Difficulty and Financial Support among Breast Cancer Survivors in Kuala Lumpur”. This research aimed to explore the outcomes and associated factors of financial difficulty among female breast cancer (BC) survivors in University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). The candidate used the secondary data from the Malaysian Breast Cancer Cohort (MYBCC) to identify the prevalence and associated factors of financial difficulty. To understand the in-depth view of the financial burden and the process of securing financial support, the candidate also conducted a qualitative study on BC survivors who are referred to the Medical Social Worker Department (MSWD) for financial support.
Altogether 23.5% to 29.2% of breast cancer survivors faced financial difficulty. Several factors associated with financial difficulty and consequences of financial burden towards the survivors and their caregivers were collectively identified. In addition, the research provided in-depth knowledge on the process of obtaining financial assistance among BC survivors with financial problems during cancer treatment.
The candidate was supervised by Professor Dr Tin Tin Su and Dr. Tania Islam.
