Universiti Malaya’s Remarkable Effort in Hosting the 40th APACPH Conference

The 40th Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) Conference, originally scheduled to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, faced unforeseen challenges that led to its cancellation. Universiti Malaya stepped in with only 10 weeks to prepare and successfully hosted the conference in Kuala Lumpur from November 7-9, 2008. This extraordinary feat showcased the university’s dedication, efficiency, and commitment to advancing public health.

Unparalleled Preparation

Despite the short timeline, Universiti Malaya mobilized its resources and expertise to organize a world-class event. The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, along with the Medical Education and Research Development Unit, Medical Faculty, and Dental Faculty, worked tirelessly to ensure the conference’s success. Their efforts included:

  • Coordinating logistics for nearly 300 participants from over 25 countries.
  • Developing a comprehensive program focused on pressing global public health challenges.
  • Ensuring seamless execution of scientific sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities.

The conference provided a valuable platform for collaboration among public health professionals, researchers, and policymakers. It reaffirmed the principle that health is a basic human right and emphasized collective action to:

  • APACPH Public Health Recognition Award: Professor Tan Sri Datu Dr Haji Mohamad Taha Arif.
  • Kazue McLaren Leadership Achievement Award: Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Amin Jalaludin.
