SPSS Hands-On Workshop for the Nursing Research Steering Group

The Nursing Research Steering Group of the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), in collaboration with the Medical Statistics Unit of the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM), successfully conducted an SPSS Hands-On Workshop from 6 to 8 March 2007. The workshop was held at the Faculty of Medicine’s Multi-Disciplinary Computer Laboratory (MD1).

The programme attracted a diverse group of participants, including Bachelor of Nursing students, nursing researchers, and academicians from UMMC, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening research competencies within the nursing and healthcare community.

The workshop covered key methodological and analytical topics essential for health research, including data management and transformation, descriptive data analysis, and inferential statistics for both continuous and categorical variables. Participants were also introduced to correlation and regression techniques. Each lecture component was complemented by structured hands-on sessions, enabling participants to apply concepts directly using SPSS.

The sessions were led by experienced faculty members, including Awang Bulgiba, Sanjay Rampal, and Moy Foong Ming. Practical facilitation and participant support were provided by Lee Pek Ling and Mohd Roshidi Ismail.
