Today is World Sleep Day (WSD). WSD recognises the burden of sleep problems and highlights the importance of healthy sleep. Sleep quality is one of the key features of good health, it is more so among older adults as sleep disorders and difficulties become more prevalent as one age. Poor sleep results in many adverse health outcomes including premature mortality. In celebration of World Sleep Day, we would like to highlight a recent finding from the PEACE study. We reported that among our older adults, who have had any abuse experiences had significantly poorer sleep than those who were not. Poor sleep quality is one of the numerous adverse effects of abuse in late life. Among the subtypes of abuse, neglect had the strongest association with poor sleep. This study was published in PLOS One by Dr Raudah Mohd Yunus and PEACE team members. We proposed that healthcare providers should always be alerted to the possibility of sleeping problems and improvement of sleep quality when dealing and managing with EAN victims, especially when there are elements of neglect.
