We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Kamesh A/L Rajendran has successfully defended his Doctor of Public Health thesis titled “Effectiveness of Fatigue Intervention Program (FIP) In Reducing Work Fatigue Among Royal Malaysian Air Force Personnel: A Quasi Experimental Study.” This groundbreaking research addresses a critical issue affecting the health, productivity, and safety of Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel.
He was supervised by Professor Dr. Victor CW Hoe and Professor Dr. Dr Mahmoud Danaee. We would like to thank Assoc Prof Gan Wee Hoe, CEO, SingHealth Community Hospitals and Senior Consultant, Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Singapore General Hospital and Dr. Bala Murali for examining the thesis and Professor Dr Mohd Zulkiflee bin Abu Bakar for chairing the Viva Voce session, Professor Dr. Shahrul Bahyah Kamaruzzaman, Deputy Dean (Postgraduate) and Associate Professor Dr. Tharani Loganathan the DrPH coordinator for their participation in the viva voce.
Dr. Kamesh’s study is the first of its kind in Malaysia to develop and evaluate a Fatigue Intervention Program (FIP) specifically designed for air force personnel. His research involved a comprehensive two-phase approach:
- Development of the FIP through literature review, expert evaluation, and pilot testing
- Implementation and evaluation using a quasi-experimental design across two air force bases
Key findings from Dr. Rajendran’s research include:
- Significant reduction in all domains of work fatigue as measured by the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI)
- Substantial improvements in most domains of sleep quality, assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
- Large effect sizes for both work fatigue reduction and sleep quality improvement at the three-month follow-up
The success of the FIP in addressing work fatigue and improving sleep quality among RMAF personnel has important implications for military health and operational readiness. Dr. Kamesh’s recommendation to integrate the FIP into healthy workplace policies for Malaysian air force personnel could lead to significant improvements in the well-being and performance of service members.
We commend Dr. Kamesh A/L Rajendran for his dedication to enhancing the health and safety of RMAF personnel. His work contributes valuable insights to the field of occupational health in military settings and provides a solid foundation for future interventions targeting work fatigue in high-stress environments.
Congratulations once again to Dr. Rajendran on this remarkable achievement in his academic and professional career!
