On July 27, 2024, the Malaysia Biosafety and Biosecurity Association (MBBA) hosted an insightful webinar in conjunction with their Annual General Meeting. The event featured two distinguished speakers who shared their expertise on critical topics in biosafety and biosecurity.
Associate Prof Dr. Kenneth Francis Rodrigues from the Biotechnology Research Institute, Universiti Malaysia Sabah shared the topic “The Design of BSL-2 and BSL-3 Laboratories in Preventing Biological Exposures”. Associate Prof Dr. Kenneth Francis Rodrigues kicked off the webinar with a detailed presentation on the design of Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories. His talk emphasized the importance of proper laboratory design in preventing biological exposures and ensuring the safety of laboratory personnel and the environment. His presentation underscored the critical role that well-designed laboratories play in preventing biological hazards, particularly in research and diagnostic settings.
This was followed with the session by Prof Dr. Victor Hoe from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, who shared the topic “Using Computational Flow Dynamics to Investigate Outbreaks of Airborne Pathogens”. The talk focus on the application of Computational Flow Dynamics (CFD) in investigating outbreaks of airborne pathogens. His session delved into the complexities and capabilities of CFD modelling in understanding the transmission dynamics of airborne diseases. He presented a case study of how CFD has been used to investigate and mitigate an outbreak of COVID-19 in an oncology ward.
