On 28th November 2023, the department organised a short yet invigorating nature walk from 9 am to 11 am at Taman Botani Rimba Ilmu, Universiti Malaya.
The objective of the activity was mainly to offer our department members a refreshing and recreational experience, providing a brief yet invigorating break from routine office work environments. Secondly, the activity sought to deepen our collective knowledge of the diverse flora species within Taman Rimba Ilmu. Led by experienced guides, participants engaged in an informative exploration of the local plant life, gaining insights into the ecological significance of each species. Lastly, and equally importantly, the event was designed to foster a strong sense of camaraderie among department members. The lush trails of Taman Botani Rimba Ilmu served not only as a backdrop for botanical exploration but also as a natural setting conducive to informal conversations, bonding, and team building. By combining these elements, the activity aimed to create a holistic and enriching experience for all.
The activity commenced at 9 am with a brief introduction and safety guidelines by our appointed nature guide. The route encompassed diverse flora, providing participants with a unique opportunity to connect with nature within the university campus. Throughout the one-hour-and-a-half nature walk session, participants engaged in enhancing knowledge and exchanging information about the diverse 80 hectares of mixed forest species of Taman Botani Rimba Ilmu guided by Ms Ilyana Hassya Azmannizam. Other than that, the participants also explored the medicinal plants, collection of bamboo trees, wetlands, nursery, herbarium, and wild orchid conservatory. After the outdoor activities, the participants then went to the indoor Rainforest and Environment Exhibition, which placed the exhibition on the types of tree wood, various species of flowers, infographic facts about our Malaysian forest, and showcases of preserved animals such as insects, birds, etc.
It was concluded around 11 am with a debriefing session where participants shared their experiences and reflections. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing appreciation for the well-organised event and the opportunity to unwind in a natural setting.
In conclusion, SPM Nature Walk 2023 was a resounding success, achieving its goal of promoting team cohesion and providing a memorable break from routine responsibilities. The event not only contributed to the well-being of our department members but also strengthened the bonds that formed the foundation of a collaborative and supportive working environment.
