The founder and chief principal investigator for the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC Project), Geoffrey Fong, a professor in the Department of Psychology cross-appointed to the School of Public Health Sciences at Waterloo, was recently appointed to be an officer of the Order of Canada.
Professor Geoffrey leads a team of more than 150 researchers across 31 countries covering more than half of the world’s population and ITC Universiti Malaya is part of this research venture since 2019.
Fong was named an officer of the Order of Canada for his work examining the effectiveness of tobacco control policies of the first-ever WHO treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which calls upon Canada and 180 other countries to implement measures such as large graphic warnings, smoke-free laws, higher tobacco taxes, anti-smoking campaigns, and limits on advertising and packaging.
The official announcement indicates Fong was recognized for his research into improved risk messaging on tobacco products and for his role in reducing the global tobacco epidemic.
Our heartiest congratulations to Professor Geoffrey from the ITC UM team headed by Associate Professor Dr Amer Siddiq Amer Nordin and Associate Professor Dr Farizah Mohd Hairi. We are very happy with your achievement and proud to be part of the ITC Project team.
