On 4th March 2005, the Occupational Health Clinic (OHC) at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) was officially launched, marking a significant milestone in occupational health services in Malaysia. As the first Occupational Health Clinic within a university hospital in the country, it will serve as a specialized referral clinic focusing on the diagnosis and management of work-related diseases, fitness-for-work assessments, and medical surveillance. This clinic will play a crucial role in ensuring workplace health and safety, particularly for healthcare workers, and will contribute to the advancement of occupational medicine in Malaysia.
The clinic will operate every Friday morning as a referral clinic, accepting patients from other UMMC clinics and nearby healthcare facilities. It will be established by Associate Professor Dr. Retneswari Masilamani and Dr. Victor Hoe, with the support of Professor Dr. Mohd Amin, the then Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Director of UMMC. In addition to clinical services, the Occupational Health Clinic will also function as a teaching facility, forming an essential part of the Master of Public Health (Occupational Health) programme. Postgraduate students will gain hands-on experience in occupational medicine, learning how to assess and manage work-related health conditions through structured clinical training. This initiative will help bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, ensuring that future occupational health specialists receive comprehensive, real-world training in workplace health management.
