
Claire is an Associate Professor in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit. She currently heads the Research Management Centre in the Faculty of Medicine and is also the editor-in-chief for the faculty’s research bulletin. She teaches epidemiology, biostatistics, and research methodology to both undergraduates and postgraduate students.
Claire has focused considerable energy on violence, adolescent health, elderly health, and reproductive and sexual health research. Her research interests include the international public health burden of violence, especially on children, women, and the elderly; investigating the linkages between violence against children/adolescents/elderly and mental health; the development and evaluation of interventions to address violence; research on the victimisation of children using information and communication audio-visual technology and exposure to social media such as cyberbullying, sexual and physical victimisation; and the application of the mixed methodology in public health research.
She is part of the University of Malaya Grand Challenge Programme; Preventing Elder Abuse and Neglect Initiative (PEACE) with fellow colleagues, Professor Dr. Noran Hairi, Associate Dr. Farizah Mohd Hairi, A/P Dr. Sajaratulnisah Othman, and A/P Dr. Siti Zaharah Jamaluddin. Her current projects include determining the magnitude and social determinants of elder abuse (EAN) among the community and institutionalised older adults; examining the effects of educational intervention on management of EAN among healthcare providers; reviewing the effectiveness of interventions on EAN; estimating the magnitude of abuse among primary school children; exploring the awareness and communication practice of parents of primary school children on sexual abuse; determining the exposure to risk and victimisation using ICTs among adolescents; and the association between domestic violence with psychiatric morbidity and victims’ readiness to leave.
Claire was appointed as a consultant and researcher by the National Population and Family Development Board, World Health Organization and UNICEF. She coordinates the Malaysian research node in the Asia Pacific Research Network on Violence in Childhood. She is also a member of the International Network for the Prevention for Elder abuse and International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Claire assessed grants for the UK National Institute for Health Research Global Health Programme, Fundamental Research Grant Scheme and the Postgraduate Research Fund. She reviewed for several journals, such as Child Abuse Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Journal of Gambling Studies, and Malaysian Family Physician. She has published ISI papers with Journal of Adolescent Health, Child Abuse and Neglect, Child Abuse Review, Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Trauma, Abuse and Violence Journal, PLoS One, BMJ Open and several other journals. She also co-authored several books and book chapters, including Statistical Analysis Using SPSS 3rd Edition with fellow colleague, Associate Professor Karuthan Chinna. Claire is also an invited speaker and conducted several workshops/courses such as Research Methodology, Data analysis using SPSS, Train the trainers for CE-EBM, and Evidence-Based Medicine.
