Speaker Biography:

Dr Anna Thorson is Head of the TDR Research Capacity Strengthening Unit, and leads the work to strengthen capacity and support leadership in implementation and clinical research, aiming to democratize research linked to infectious diseases of poverty. She is committed to equitable access to research opportunities for health impact and has prior to her work with TDR led the HRP Alliance for research capacity strengthening with the Dept of SRH/HRP, WHO. In her earlier role at Karolinska Institutet, she coordinated a Swedish-Vietnamese consortia within the health system research capacity strengthening programme. Anna has pursued interests in both clinical infectious disease (ID) medicine and research and is a licensed ID specialized MD and has been awarded Professor, with Karolinska Institutet. Her research encompasses amongst other gender and equity perspectives on infectious diseases and on SRHR, and methods of development in vulnerable populations. Within her role as Professor and scientist, she has led and managed international research partnerships focused on epidemiology, health system and implementation research on tuberculosis, HIV, Ebola, Zika and COVID-19 as well as on sexual and reproductive health and rights.
