Career Path and Achievements

Dr. Nurashikin Ibrahim has recently been appointed as the Director of the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health (NCEMH) under the Ministry of Health Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in her illustrious career in public health. Her journey to this prestigious position is a testament to her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to improving mental health services in Malaysia.

Educational Background

Dr. Nurashikin’s academic journey began with her pursuit of a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Malaya, which she completed in 1994. She further specialized by obtaining a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2001 and a Master of Public Health in Family Health in 2004 from the same institution. She also received training in the area of  Mental Health Promotion and Mental Illness Prevention, Psychosocial Support in Disaster and Suicide Prevention from Hunter Institute of Mental Health, Australia, Hyogo Institute of Traumatic Stress, (HITS) Japan and AISRAP, Australia respectively.

These qualifications and area of expertise laid a strong foundation for her career in public health, equipping her with the knowledge and skills necessary to address complex health issues at both individual and community levels.

Professional Journey

Throughout her career, Dr. Nurashikin has held various significant roles within the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Prior to her working at the Ministry of Health, she serves as Medical Officer at University Hospital and Pusat Kawalan Kusta Negara (PKKN) in Sungai Buloh, Selangor. Before her recent promotion, she holds the post as Consultant Public Health Specialist and­ Sector Head of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Violence Injury Prevention Sector of Disease Control Division of the Ministry of Health where she was instrumental in coordinating mental health initiatives and promoting mental well-being across the nation. She was also responsible as Head Coordinator of the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services of Ministry of Health in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in Malaysia and been involved at the field in many of crisis that has occurred in Malaysia; among them, the unprecedented incident of air tragedy of MH370 and MH17 in 2014, massive flood tragedy n 2014 and 2021, as well  as coordination of mental health support for Humanitarian Mission for Rohingya’s, in 2017

Her work involves collaborating with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), universities, and both private and government entities to close service gaps and enhance the exchange of mental health expertise among healthcare professionals.

Promotion to Director of NCEMH

In Mac 2024, Dr. Nurashikin was promoted to the position of Director of NCEMH, reflecting her extensive experience and leadership capabilities in the field of mental health. As the new Director, she is expected to spearhead the centre’s efforts in advancing mental health services, implementing innovative strategies, and ensuring that mental health care is accessible and effective for all Malaysians.

Contributions to Mental Health

Dr. Nurashikin’s contributions to mental health extend beyond her administrative roles. She has been actively involved in research and policy development, addressing critical issues such as psychological distress, coping strategies, and help-seeking behaviours among vulnerable populations. Her work has been pivotal in shaping mental health policies and programs that are responsive to the needs of the community.

Recognition and Social Achievements

Dr Nurashikin has received several awards among them the Ahli Mangku Wilayah (AMW),  Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN), Excellence Service Medal and “The Heart of Gold Award” for being an active civil servant in “Strategies Addressing Mental Health in Malaysia”

In addition to her medical career, Dr. Nurashikin or also known as Dr Ann among family and friends, is also a part-time professional singer. Her talents in music have seen her perform at various events, including serving as an emcee and singer at her medical class reunion. Her ability to balance a demanding career in public health with her passion for music highlights her multifaceted talents and dedication to both her professional and personal interests.
