On 28th May 2024, we had the privilege of hosting a lecture by Dr Sharifah Aisyah, a renowned medical doctor and quality specialist from the National Heart Institute (Institut Jantung Negara, IJN) Kuala Lumpur. The lecture, which focused on “Quality in Healthcare,” was an enlightening experience for our Master of Public Health students enrolled in the Principles of Management in Health module (MQB7029 & MQB7047).
Dr Aisyah introduced various Quality Frameworks that are instrumental in analyzing and improving the quality of care. She emphasized the need for adaptability and creativity within healthcare organizations. She also discussed Donabedian’s Seven Pillars of Quality, which include efficacy, effectiveness, efficiency, optimality, acceptability, legitimacy, and equity. A key takeaway from her lecture was the importance of love in delivering quality healthcare.
A significant portion of the lecture was dedicated to Patient Safety. Dr Aisyah shed light on the origins of blame culture and advocated for a systems approach to prevent errors and enhance safety. She also explained the role of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) in evaluating the properties, effects, and impacts of health technologies. This information is crucial in informing policy-making and improving the quality of life.
The lecture was highly engaging, with questions from the audience, reflecting the relevance and importance of the topic. We are grateful to Dr Aisyah for sharing her expertise and insights, which will undoubtedly contribute to our ongoing efforts to improve healthcare quality. We look forward to more such enlightening sessions in the future.
