The International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) is an international non-governmental professional society whose aims are to foster the scientific progress, knowledge and development of occupational health and safety in all its aspects. It was founded in 1906 in Milan as the Permanent Commission on Occupational Health. Today, ICOH is the world’s leading international scientific society in the field of occupational health with a membership of more than 2,000 professionals from over 110 countries. The ICOH is recognized by the United Nations as a non-governmental organization (NGO) and has close working relationships with ILO and WHO.
The most visible activities of ICOH are the triennial World Congresses on Occupational Health, with more than 3,000 attendants. During the 34th congress held in Marrakesh, Morocco, Dr Yap Kian Kiong, a Master of Public Health candidate from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University Malaya, was awarded 3rd prize for the Student Poster Competition, titled “Predictors of Noise- Related Hearing Disorder (NRHD) among Vector Control Workers in Kuala Lumpur”. The competition is for students worldwide to showcase their studies to the professional community. He also won a monetary prize of CHF 400.00 and entitled a waved membership fee to ICOH for the tenure of 2024-2026.
Dr. Yap conducted a cross-sectional study on vector control workers employed by a local authority in Kuala Lumpur. The study showed a high prevalence (51.4%) of NRHD among vector control workers who were involved in fogging activity. The factors associated with NRHD are fogging activities, male gender, and age beyond 40 years. The findings of this this study have been published. Dr Yap was supervised by Dr Lim Yin Cheng.
