World Heart Day 2020 #UseHeart to beat cardiovascular disease

World Heart Day is celebrated on the 29th September annually. Cerebrovascular disease and ischemic heart disease are the top two causes of death in Malaysia, amounting to 15.2% and 14.8% of the total deaths respectively. Beyond promoting physical activity and balanced diets as a healthy lifestyle, sleep and mental health hygiene should be prioritized as prevention strategies. Sleep deprivation is an often overlooked but significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.

In a letter to the editor – the Star newspaper, Dr Wan Kim Sui, Prof Noran N Hairi and Dr Hamimatunnisa Johar highlighted the importance of having a good sleep hygiene. Having a good night’s sleep is a cliché in this modern world as some people are working around the clock to meet their basic home needs while others are unable to switch off from their life (mostly on gadgets and social media).
