Water Quality and Public Health Implications along the WSP Chain

On 4 July 2018, Victor CW Hoe delivered a lecture titled “Water Quality and Public Health Implications along the Water Safety Plan (WSP) Chain” at the Training of Trainers (TOT) programme held at the Indah Water Konsortium Training Centre.

The two-day programme was jointly organised by Cap-Net UNDP, MyCDNet, and Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF) Southeast Asia Network of Water Utilities (ASPEC), in collaboration with Malaysian Water Association and Indah Water Konsortium. The training brought together participants involved in water treatment and management from across Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak.

The lecture formed part of the WSP capacity-building initiative, focusing on the integration of public health principles within water safety management. Key topics included water-related diseases, the reduction of diarrhoeal disease risks through improved drinking water and sanitation, and the evaluation of sanitation services in Malaysia.

The session was highly interactive, with participants demonstrating strong engagement, particularly in discussions on water contamination from industrial and household sources. There was notable interest in emerging concerns such as endocrine-disrupting chemicals and their implications for public health. Constructive dialogue also explored practical strategies to minimise contamination of water sources, especially through improved management of household chemical use.
