Noran Naqiah Mohd Hairi

Professor Noran Hairi is renowned for her work on the epidemiology of ageing, focusing on physical disability, sarcopenia, and frailty. She led the Prevent Elder Abuse and Neglect Initiative (PEACE), which addressed elder abuse through a holistic approach. PEACE’s efforts led to the former Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister announcing the need for a new act to protect elderly welfare. The initiative evolved into PEACE 2.0, focusing on financial exploitation, and PEACE 3.0, collaborating with WHO to evaluate elder abuse assessment tools.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Noran’s expertise became crucial. She and her team at Universiti Malaya’s Social and Preventive Medicine Department addressed the critical need for reliable public health information. They produced over 500 science communication materials to provide accurate information, counter misinformation, and enhance public health literacy.

Noran’s work in epidemiology and public health has been instrumental in addressing elder abuse and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating her commitment to improving public health and protecting vulnerable populations1.
