Non-communicable disease including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and chronic lung disease, are collectively responsible for 74% of all deaths worldwide. These diseases share the same risk factors such as tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, physical inactivity and unhealthy diets. In this inaugural lecture, Prof Dr Moy Foong Ming will share her journey in health and wellness as a researcher. Her research in health and wellness has spanned over three decades and she is forever grateful to Universiti Malaya for providing her the support over the years. Understanding how these lifestyle risk factors are associated with health outcomes and implementing interventions in the pursuit of health and wellness are her main research interests. Development and validation of tools for more reliable and valid measurements of lifestyle risk factors also form an important part of her research. The development and validation of a mobile diet applications (MyDietCam) is her latest project. The aim of the study is to make dietary assessment more valid and less burdensome for both researchers and users. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was actively involved in raising awareness and promoting public health preventive measures for COVID-19, as well as debunking myths and public misconception towards COVID-19. Prevention is better than cure, she highlights that we should start taking action to prevent diseases, work towards wellness and achieving health.
