The Department of Social and Preventive Medicine (SPM), Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, is proud to announce that two of its online microcredential courses, Occupational Safety and Health Hazards and Risk Assessment and Management, have been selected for inclusion in the ASEAN University Network (AUN) Online Course Exchange. This platform promotes high-quality, credit-bearing online learning across member universities, expanding educational access throughout Southeast Asia.
This regional recognition marks an important step in Universiti Malaya’s mission to lead in occupational health education and training.
From Innovation to Integration
Developed under the MC@UM microcredential initiative, both courses form part of the Occupational Health: Managing Hazard and Risk at Work ExpertTrack, launched on FutureLearn in 2022. These modules were created to meet the growing demand for accessible, high-quality learning in workplace health and safety.
Importantly, the ExpertTrack is not only available to the public via FutureLearn but is also embedded within the Occupational Health module of the Master of Public Health (MPH) programme at Universiti Malaya. This integration ensures alignment between continuing professional development and academic pathways, enhancing the learning experience for both postgraduate students and external participants.
Teaching Safety, Managing Risk
These two two-week courses provide foundational knowledge and practical tools in occupational health:
- Occupational Safety and Health Hazards introduces learners to common workplace hazards—physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic, and psychosocial—and guides them through exposure standards and hazard identification.
- Risk Assessment and Management focuses on systematic risk evaluation and the application of control measures through structured frameworks such as the hierarchy of controls and occupational safety and health (OSH) management systems.
Designed for a broad audience including healthcare workers, occupational safety officers, and public health practitioners, these courses promote real-world application of core OSH principles.
Advancing Regional Learning in Public Health
The inclusion of these courses in the AUN Online Course Exchange demonstrates their academic quality and regional relevance. It also facilitates wider access to critical occupational health training across ASEAN universities, supporting the region’s goal of developing safer, healthier, and more productive work environments.
By bridging microcredentials with postgraduate education and international networks, Universiti Malaya continues to strengthen its role in shaping the future of public and occupational health education.
Acknowledgement
This achievement was made possible through the support of MC@UM and the AUN Secretariat, whose efforts enable regional collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
