On 27 October 2024, two delegates from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Mohd Faris bin Mahmud (MPH Programme) and Imran Azwan bin Azizan (DrPH Programme), participated in the HIV/AIDS and M-Pox Awareness Programme. This event was organised by the Unit HIV, Unit CDC PKD Hulu Langat, Persatuan Insaf Murni Malaysia, and Pusat Kesihatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) to enhance UKM students’ knowledge of HIV and M-Pox.
Held at Kolej Kediaman Keris Mas, UKM, the event commenced at 8:00 a.m. with exhibitions from the four agencies. Following registration, attendees completed a pre-test and enjoyed breakfast before a full day of learning and engagement.
The formal programme opened with a captivating performance by Persatuan Insaf Murni Malaysia, featuring a puisidra, a Malay performance that integrates puisi (poetry) and dramatic elements (drama) to portray the lived experiences of people with HIV. Following this, Dr Masdalina binti Azhari, the Director of Pusat Kesihatan UKM, delivered the opening remarks. The opening session included keynote speeches from Dr Norsafinaz binti Mohamed, Health Officer at the Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Hulu Langat, who emphasised the importance of public health initiatives and community engagement. This was followed by a comprehensive talk on HIV and M-Pox by Dr Norizah Hj Ibrahim, the Head of Unit HIV, who shared insights on recent developments and preventive measures related to HIV and M-Pox.
The event also featured an interactive Kahoot game session, allowing participants to test their knowledge enjoyably and engagingly. This was followed by a lively karaoke competition, where participants showcased their talents. SPM delegate Imran Azwan bin Azizan captivated the audience and secured first place in the karaoke session, adding a celebratory tone to the event and highlighting the versatility and enthusiasm of the SPM representatives.
The closing ceremony included a post-test to assess the knowledge gained throughout the day, with awards presented by Dr Norsafinaz binti Mohamed. The event concluded with lunch, providing an opportunity for participants to network and reflect on the day’s insights and experiences.
Overall, the participation of the SPM delegates in this programme underscores the organisation’s dedication to professional development in public health. This event not only provided valuable information on pressing health issues but also fostered a sense of camaraderie among all attendees. We look forward to SPM’s involvement in future programs of this nature, not only to promote health awareness but also to foster meaningful connections with diverse community members.
