Communicating Evidence to Empower Informed Decision-Making

We are happy to share the good news that our MBBS students won the first prize in the Cochrane Intervarsity Competition entitled “Communicating Evidence to Empower Informed Decision-Making” organised by Cochrane Malaysia. The competition was organised in conjunction with its 10th Anniversary celebrated on 26 September 2024, at the Avante Hotel, Bandar Utama. Dato’ Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia, officiated the event.  

The competition encouraged students to produce videos showcasing the use of Cochrane evidence in healthcare decision-making, emphasising effective communication, creativity, and patient empowerment. In addition to the video presentations, participants completed a quiz on systematic reviews, contributing to their overall scores. In total, 12 teams from six universities participated. The participating universities were Universiti Malaya, IMU University, RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus, MAHSA University, Manipal University College Malaysia and Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. Having four teams from the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya to participate in the competition is very encouraging. 

The Champion was the ALKchemy team.  The team members were 4th year medical students and the details are as below:

Team ‘The ALKchemy’ (CHAMPION)
Topic: Targeted therapy for advanced anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-rearranged non-small cell lung cancer
Team members: Naylee Izzati Binti Zamri, Mohamad Nur Firdaus Bin Zulkifli and Khadijah Binti Zun ‘Arif Hakim

Topic: Crohn’s Disease
Team members: Tiong Chiong Kian, Gabriel Soon Chai Long and Wong Khai Hsin 

Team ‘Cure Clue Crew’
Topic: Mindfulness-enhanced parenting programmes for improving the psychosocial outcomes of children (0-18 years) & their parents
Team members: Eng Wendy, Ong Jelyn and Ganga Rubini A/P G. Sangal 

Congratulations to all Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya students for participating in this event.
