KUALA LUMPUR NICOTINE ADDICTION INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2022

“Cessation-In-A-Box”

On the 3rd October 2022, the Nicotine Addiction Research Collaborating Group (NARCC), University of Malaya Centre of Addiction Sciences (UMCAS) in collaboration with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) successfully convened one full-day conference at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The theme: Cessation-In-A-Box fittingly encapsulates the 4 symposiums: creative approaches for smoking cessation, advocacy as a tobacco control strategy, innovative approaches in tobacco control and tobacco control policy and implementation in the 21st century.

Associate Professor Dr Rusdi Abd Rashid, Director of Universiti Malaya Centre for Addiction Science Studies (UMCAS) welcomed all distinguished participants and speakers and the KLNAC 2022 International Conference was enthusiastically declared opened by Associate Professor Dr Anne Yee, NARCC Coordinator, Universiti Malaya, Chairperson KLNAC 2022 International Conference on behalf of  YB Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Noor Hisham bin Abdullah, Director General of Health, Malaysia who emphasized that Universiti Malaya plays a vital role to strengthening tobacco control strategies in Malaysia and while working towards the generational-end-game (GEG) and that the Nicotine Addiction Research Group (NARCC), University of Malaya Centre of Addiction Sciences (UMCAS) continuously supports such an essential endeavour to promote sharing and knowledge-based findings.

Associate Professor Dr Anne Yee initiated the conference with plenary 1 on GEMPAQ® (Getting Every Smoker to Participate and Quit Smoking) an Innovation Tool to Achieve Tobacco Generational Endgame.

A myriad of titles ranging from creative approaches, advocacy, innovative approaches and tobacco control policy and implementation in the 21st century was part of the symposiums.

Symposium 1: Creative Approaches for Smoking Cessation

Dr Subashini Ambigapathy – Sharing the success of the innovation project of MY Q-CIG – A comprehensive and updated quit smoking record book used in quit smoking clinics in Perak, Malaysia and smoking cessation clinic practice in Buntong health clinic, Perak Malaysia
Professor Dr Rahimah Abdul Kadir – University Students as New Agents of Change in Tobacco Control: A Novel Teaching -Learning Initiative in meeting the “Generational Endgame”

Symposium 2: Advocacy as Tobacco Control Strategy

Associate Professor Dr Nur Amani Ahmad Tajuddin – Knowledge transfer program: from university to schools. And advocacy training to module development for schools and universities

In the afternoon session, a lively forum discussion on Harm Reduction: Is it the way to go for smoking cessation? was moderated by Dr Wong Chee Kuan, Faculty of Medicine, UM.
