Our heartiest congratulations to Ms Nurul Syafika Amir Hamzah who has successfully passed her Master of Medical Science viva defence held on the 24th April 2019. The title of her dissertation is ‘The Mental Health Status and Its Associated Factors among First-Year Students in a Public University, Malaysia’. The study, which was part of the Healthy Campus Initiative programme aimed to explore the mental health status and its associated factors among the first year students at the University of Malaya. It was found that 21% of the university students experienced depression, 50% experienced anxiety and 12% experienced stress. The findings of the study suggest that depression, anxiety and stress represent a significant public health concern in university populations. This study also highlighted the importance of early screening and promoting mental health in universities. Ms Syafika, a University of Malaya-Kyoto University Double Degree Programme student was supervised by Dr Abqariyah Yahya and Dr Nik Daliana Nik Farid.
