The Department would like to congratulate Dr Thilaka Chinnayah a Public Health Specialist from the Johor State Health Department who has been hand-picked by the World Health Organization (WHO) for a temporary assignment of six months, starting 1 June 2018, as Medical Officer with the International Health Regulations in the Western Pacific Regional Office (WPRO), Manila, under the WHO Health Emergencies Programme (WHE).
The mission of the WHO Health Emergencies Programme (WHE) is to build the capacity of Member States to manage health emergency risks, when national capacities are overwhelmed, to lead and coordinate the international health response to contain outbreaks and to provide effective relief and recovery to affected populations. Under the supervision of the Program Area Manager, Country Health Emergency Preparedness and IHR (CPI), the Medical Officer (IHR) will lead a group of professionals overseeing the IHR Secretariat with the aim of implementing legal and procedural aspects of IHR (2005) within WHO, including reporting to WHO’s governing bodies.
Dr Thilaka was considered by WHO for this position in view of her proven knowledge and skills in international public health, including epidemiology and public health policy. Her broad knowledge of the principles of IHR (2005) and public health emergency management as well as her relevant working experience will be a valuable asset to WHO’s technical team.
Dr Thilika is a Master of Public Health and Master of Public Health (Occupational Health) graduate from the University of Malaya.
