International Day of Older People

Like other developing countries, the older population in Malaysia is rapidly growing in comparison to the younger age groups. On the 1st October 2020, The Department of Social Welfare and Ministry of Women’s Family and Community Development organised a whole day event to commemorate the contributions that older people make to society and raise awareness of the issues and challenges of ageing in Malaysia.  

An interactive forum on “Pandemik dan Penuaan : Mendepani Perubahan” was held discussing on the well-being and needs of older people during this pandemic. Increasing understanding of the impact of covid-19 on mental health and financial wellbeing of older person was addressed by Prof Dr Noran Naqiah Hairi.

Other members of the panel discussion include Dato Dr Tengku Aizan Tengku Abdul Hamid from Institute Penyelidikan Penuaan Malaysia, University Putra Malaysia and Dr Rokiah Mohd from Ministry of Health Malaysia. This forum was chaired by YBrs Puan Fatimah Zuraidah Salleh – Timbalan Ketua Pengarah (Operasi), Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat. The theme this year is “Pandemics: Do They Change How We Address Age and Ageing?”
