Event Type

Perfluorinated chemicals and acetaminophen: studies of neurodevelopmental effects in the Danish National Birth cohort (DNBC)

The Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC) was established to evaluate the fetal programming theory which the cohort recruited ~100,000 pregnancies during 1996-2002, and the offspring were closely followed since birth at multiple ages and currently in its 18th years of follow-up. In this seminar, Dr Liew will present a series of DNBC studies that investigated in-utero exposures to some widespread endocrine disrupting chemicals such as perfluorinated compounds that are synthetic chemicals used in commercial and industrial applications, and acetaminophen (Tylenol) the most commonly used pain and fever medication, on a range of neurodevelopmental endpoints including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD), cerebral palsy (CP), and other brain function measures.

About the Speaker

Dr Liew is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH), and the Yale Center for Perinatal, Pediatric & Environmental Epidemiology (CPPEE). His research utilizes several large-scale population-based cohorts to study neurodevelopmental consequences resulting from fetal exposures to environmental toxicants and endocrine disrupting compounds. Dr Liew was awarded the prestigious UCLA Chancellor’s postdoc award in 2017, and his current research is funded by the NIH/NIEHS pathway to independence award (K99/R00).
