SUMMARY:CEBP Workshop Series | Confounding: Causal Thinking\, Exchangeabili
 ty\, DAGs and Identifiability
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Centre for Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Practice (CEBP
)\, Faculty of Medicine\, Universiti Malaya\, will be organising the first
session of the CEBP Workshop Series titled “Confounding: Causal Thinkin
 g\, Exchangeability\, DAGs and Identifiability.”\n\n\n\nThis session wil
l introduce participants to fundamental concepts in epidemiology and causa
 l inference\, including causal thinking\, exchangeability\, directed acycl
ic graphs (DAGs)\, and identifiability. The workshop aims to strengthen pa
rticipants’ understanding of how confounding can influence research find
ings and the importance of appropriate study design and analysis in public
  health research.\n\n\n\n🗓 Dates: 22 May 2026 (Friday)🕘 Time: 2.00 a
m – 5.00 pm MYT📍 Venue: TDR Regional Training Centre in Western Pacif
ic Region (SPM Studio)\, Faculty of Medicine\, Universiti Malaya💰 Fee:
 RM50\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Dr Sanjay Rampal Lek
hraj Rampal\n\n\n\nDr Sanjay Rampal is Executive Director of Research Deve
lopment at Universiti Malaya and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Heal
th. Medically trained in India\, he served in Malaysia’s Ministry of Hea
lth before earning an MPH from Harvard and a PhD from Johns Hopkins. Since
joining Universiti Malaya in 2005\, Dr Rampal has advanced Malaysia’s p
ublic health research capacity\, focusing on the epidemiology and preventi
on of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases\, cancer\, and communicable di
seases such as dengue. His methodological expertise spans research design\
, biostatistics\, and causal inference. He has published 122 peer-reviewed
  papers (h-index: 38 WOS\, 39 SCOPUS) and supervised over 65 postgraduate
students.\n\n\n\nDr Rampal has held major leadership roles\, including Dep
uty Dean (Research) and Head of the Department of Social &amp\; Preventive
Medicine\, driving transformative growth in research and education. He ha
s led regional and global collaborations\, chaired national speciality com
mittees\, and contributed to Malaysia’s COVID-19 response through resear
ch\, policy\, and public communication. As a Fellow of the Academy of Medi
cine Malaysia and a global leader\, Dr Rampal is dedicated to advancing pu
blic health through research excellence\, education\, and collaborative le
 adership.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Vivek Jason Jayaraj\n\n\n\nDr Vive
k Jason Jayaraj is a Public Health Physician\, currently serving at the Na
tional Institutes of Health Malaysia. He has previously served in rural Sa
bah for several years prior to his enrollment in postgraduate study. He is
a professional with a keen interest in the confluence of data analytics\,
epidemiology\, infectious disease\, and health systems. His portfolio inc
ludes key projects on the epidemiology of COVID-19\, the effectiveness of
non-pharmaceutical interventions\, and the comparative impact of health sy
stems on COVID-19 transmission. \n\n\n\nWith a penchant for data-driven so
lutions\, Dr Vivek has been involved in developing and implementing mathem
atical\, time-series\, and machine-learning models to forecast the spread
of infectious diseases\, including dengue\, COVID-19\, and hand\, foot and
mouth disease (HFMD). He strongly advocates the integration of data and c
ompassion in creating a promising future in healthcare. He relentlessly st
rives to reduce the time gaps in data-driven solutions within the realm of
infectious disease and health systems\, working to shape a world where te
chnology and humanity meet to improve health outcomes.\n\n\n\nDr Vivek ded
icates himself to community outreach with great passion. He led the team t
o set up pour flush pit latrines at the Orang Asli village at Bukit Manchu
ng with a sanitary education programme. He also conducted risk assessment
activities at Angelcare Nursing Home and Persatuan Pengasih Malaysia durin
g the COVID-19 pandemic.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is suitable for postgrad
uate students\, researchers\, and individuals interested in epidemiology\,
public health\, and health research methods.\n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n[
