Assoc Prof Amer Siddiq, the director of UMCares (Community and Sustainability Centre), University of Malaya, Dr Wong Min Fui and Assoc Prof Hazreen from the university’s Centre for Population Health, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Medicine have been featured on male suicide in three different newspaper articles including TheStar, FreeMalaysiaToday and CodeBlue. The National Suicide Registry Malaysia revealed that men have three times higher risk of dying by suicide compared to women. The economic downturn due to the Covid-19 pandemic has caused ongoing stressful life events as a result of unemployment and financial issues. As such, men who comprise 80% of national workforce are first to be hit with as they are usually the breadwinners of the family. The authors call out to all men folk to come forward and seek the help they need and recognize the sources available nationwide.
