Measures Needed to Curb Widespread Community Transmission in Sabah

In an interview with the News Strait Times newspaper, Professor Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud said the key to stopping the pandemic from overwhelming Sabah’s healthcare facilities was to curb widespread community transmission.

The medical reinforcement deployed from the Peninsular was not able to cater for the intesive care units’ demands as each ICU beds requires four nurses and equipment. Sending ventilators alone won’t be enough.

Among the measures that can be taken are:

  • Mass screening using rapid test kit antigen
  • Increase contact tracing with massive numbers of contact tracers
  • Activating all quarantine facilities

He said Sarawak was too far away for Covid-19 patients to be easily relocated in the event Sabah’s healthcare system became stretched.
