What is the test for COVID-19 infection?

Consultant Clinical Microbiologist Dr Nadia Atiya discussing COVID-19 test available in the University Malaya Medical Centre and the potential of research in this COVID-19 crisis. The test that is currently being carried out by the Medical Microbiology Department is the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) which is to identify the SARS CoV 2 virus RNA. The test is conducted on a sample from your throat and nose (nasopharyngeal sample) and also from sputum (if available). When you visit a healthcare facility, the healthcare workers will need to take a nasopharyngeal swab.

The session is hosted by Associate Professor Dr Amer Siddiq, Consultant Psychiatrist in UMMC and filmed in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya.
