MTUC Conference on OSH in Melaka

Being in the Occupational Health profession, the most important part is to be able to understand the issues that are affecting the workers. It is always a privilege to be able to speak at the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) event. The MTUC is a federation of trade unions and registered under the Societies Act, 1955. It is the oldest National Centre representing the Malaysian workers. Prof Victor Hoe was invited to share his experience at the 17th National Occupational Safety and Health Conference on the 15-17 October 2019 held at the Mahkota Hotel in Melaka. The theme for the conference was “Identifying Occupational Diseases – Responsibilities of Stake Holders”.

Prof Victor Hoe presented the paper on “Challenges in the Identification of Occupational Disease among Occupational Health Doctors”. The other presenters were Dr Priya Ragunath from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Dr Mohd Fizal Izwan Abd Kadir from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Dr Edrin Nazri Abdul Rasib from Social Security Organisation (SOCSO) and speaker from the Malaysian Society of Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH).

The main concern of the participants was the effect of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) and psychosocial hazards on workers’ health. Is the current legislation and policy in Malaysia able to cope with this change?
